What is Curanderismo?
Many who have heard of Curanderismo have a narrow view of what it really is and what it involves. This misunderstanding probably comes from the Spanish word itself, "curar", meaning "to heal".
Curanderismo is not only a form of folk healing, it also includes the practice white magic, ritual, cleansings, energy work, spirit contact, divination, and a vast amount of prayer just to name a few. While some practitioners prefer to engage only in one area, others work in all areas.
Curanderismo is a very spiritual practice with strong religious faith. Practitioners use a variety of objects including herbs, spices, eggs, lemons, limes, Holy Water, Saints, Crucifixes, prayer, candles, incense, oils and divination tools. Most include spirit assistance. Not all practitioners work in the same way. For example, one person may perform a spiritual cleansing with a raw unbroken egg while another may employ a bundle of herbs for the cleansing tool.
On a healing level, the Curandera views life as a whole (mind-body-spirit). The three connected is what creates life. If one of these parts is missing life does not exist. You simply cannot heal one area without concern for the other. All physical, mental, and spiritual illnesses are an imbalance of the mind-body-spirit. For example, a person becomes physically ill with high fever...once the fever is gone the harmful energy of the fever remains. The lingering energy can create mental fatigue, emotional disturbances, or bad luck. On the other hand when one is suffering from a spiritual illness, once removed the energy can continue affecting the physical....actually creating more illness. To remedy this, the entire connection (the mind, the body, and the spirit) must be approached. The practitioner may approach healing by means of rituals, herbs, massage, aromas, channeled healing, candles, Saints, incense, and prayer. Sometimes healing can include all of the above. This depends on the practitioner and on the individual's personal situation.
The Curandera, Curandero who include magical workings in their practice usually only perform "good magic". The rituals often invoke the help of the Catholic Saints, Folk Saints, family members who have passed on, or another spirit. Sometimes the practitioner will include the presence of the individual in part of the ritual but most often will work alone. The individual may be asked to recite certain prayers over a period of time or given something to carry in their pocket. And again prayer is always involved.
Because of my claim to the Catholic faith I am often asked how I can take part in witchcraft, spirit communication and spiritual healing. These people believe that all this goes against the Catholic teachings. I disagree. My response to this is always as follows....
I never claim to heal a person, I am but a mere channel....God is the healer. The gift of healing rests within each one of us.
Those who have the gift of healing should not ignore it....
1st Timothy 4:14
Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the elders laid their hands upon you.
We all can spiritually heal in Gods name......
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Is it taboo to "know" how to perform witchcraft (the wisdom)?
According to bible scholars God gave the gift of magical knowledge (wisdom) to many people including Solomon and Moses. The magic of Moses was a mixture of Egyptian magic and Kabbalistic knowledge......
And Moses became learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
God gave Solomon very great wisdom, discernment, and breadth of understanding as vast as the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else, wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, children of Mahol; his fame spread throughout all the surrounding nations.
Is it taboo to know the future or to channel spirits?.....
1 Corinthians 13:1
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
The Book of Revelation Verse 3
"Blessed is he who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written therein; for the time is near."
1 Corinthians Chapter 14:1
Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless some one interprets, so that the church may be edified. Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. What am I to do? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray wit the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.
You also can't ignore that the Catholic Church is known for promoting and training exorcists. I know this because I have personally met one of them. This in itself is a form of magical practice and ritual.
According to my belief, if you are able to perform magical practices and/or be a healing channel...these are truly gifts from God....without God nothing is possible. If all these instances are found in the bible and practiced today in the Catholic Church how can it be against the Catholic faith?
Furthermore, because I am Catholic Curandera....the teachings of my courses will reflect my spirituality. If ANYONE is interested in the online courses that I offer the beauty of Curanderismo is that it is not prejudice. The material can be applied to ANY path or belief system.
Curanderismo is a life long process and a committed lifestyle. An old curandera that I knew used to say "it's God's work, I'm just the secretary".
